Dyson Airwrap on Curly & Coily Hair — Diffuser, Smoothing, and Wash-Day Routine

How the Dyson Airwrap actually performs on 3a–4c hair — which attachments matter, what it can't do, and the wash-day routine that makes it shine.

Dyson didn't initially design the Airwrap with 3c–4c hair in mind, but the 2023 attachment refresh added a wide-tooth comb and Coanda diffuser that meaningfully changed what's possible. Here's the honest breakdown for curly and coily textures.

Does the Airwrap work on curly hair?

On 3a–3b curls, very well — the 40 mm Coanda barrel produces clean, defined curls in 2–3 seconds per section. On 3c–4c, the dryer + diffuser combination is what shines; it dries with much less frizz than a hooded dryer or hand dryer alone.

Which attachments matter most for curly hair?

Three: (1) the wide-tooth comb attachment for stretching coils after wash, (2) the Coanda diffuser for low-frizz drying, and (3) the soft smoothing brush if you want to do an occasional silk press. The Coanda barrels themselves are less essential for type 4 hair.

Can the Dyson Airwrap straighten curly hair?

It can do a passable silk press on 3a–3c hair when paired with a quality heat protectant — soft smoothing brush + Coanda smoother. On 4a–4c, you'll get a stretch and elongation but full straightening still requires a flat iron at higher temps. The Airwrap maxes at 150°C, which is intentional for damage prevention but a real limit on tighter textures.

Wash-day routine with the Airwrap?

After washing and a leave-in: (1) section into 4–6 parts; (2) apply curl cream and detangle with the comb attachment on warm/low; (3) switch to the diffuser, hover-dry without scrunching to 80%; (4) air-finish or use the cool-shot to set. Total time on type 4 hair: 25–35 min. Significantly faster than air-drying with much less shrinkage.

Does the Airwrap cause frizz on curly hair?

Done correctly, no — the Coanda diffuser uses focused airflow that follows curl pattern instead of disrupting it. Frizz typically comes from too-high fan setting or moving the diffuser instead of hovering. Low-medium fan + low-medium heat is the rule.

Is it worth it for type 4 hair?

If wash days currently take 90+ minutes between drying and styling, yes — the Airwrap can cut that in half. If you live in mostly braids or protective styles and don't blow-dry often, the Airwrap's curly-specific value is lower than for type 3 hair.
