Dyson Airwrap Coanda 2× — What's New, What Changed, Should You Upgrade?
The Coanda 2× barrels double the air-pressure effect at the surface. Here's the engineering, the daily-use difference, and whether existing Airwrap owners should upgrade.

In 2024 Dyson refreshed the Airwrap with new Coanda 2× barrels. The branding suggests 'twice the Coanda' — and engineering-wise that's surprisingly close to literal. Here's what actually changed and whether it matters.
What is the Coanda 2× barrel?
A redesigned Coanda barrel with a doubled pressure differential between the airflow exit slots and the barrel surface. Practically: the Coanda effect grips hair faster and holds it more securely once wrapped. Geometry of the slot ports and barrel diameter were both retuned.
How is it different from the original Coanda barrel?
Three measurable changes. (1) Hair grip time drops from ~8–10 s to ~4–5 s per section. (2) Curl tightness increases — same time = tighter curl, or same tightness in less time. (3) Wider hair-type window — works better on slick or product-coated hair that previously slipped.
Will Coanda 2× barrels fit my older Airwrap?
Yes — the barrel mount is unchanged across all Airwrap generations from 2018 onwards. Coanda 2× barrels are sold as standalone replacements; you can buy them and use them with an existing Airwrap handle. We carry them for shipping with all Airwrap orders.
Is the new Airwrap (with Coanda 2×) worth upgrading from a 2022 model?
Probably not. The handle, motor, attachments other than the barrels are identical. If your existing Airwrap is in good shape, just buy the Coanda 2× barrels separately — about €60 each — and you have the upgrade for a fraction of a new unit.
Does Coanda 2× cause more damage?
No — heat profile is unchanged at 150°C max. The faster grip means slightly less total dwell time per section, which marginally reduces thermal exposure. Net damage profile is the same or very slightly better than original Coanda.
How do I know if my barrel is Coanda 2×?
Coanda 2× barrels have a copper-trim ring around the base of the barrel and 'Coanda 2×' printed on the lower body. Original Coanda barrels are uniform single-color and do not carry the marking.
Bottom line
Coanda 2× is a real, measurable improvement — not marketing fluff. If you're buying new, every current Airwrap ships with Coanda 2× barrels. If you own an older Airwrap, replacement Coanda 2× barrels are the most cost-effective upgrade path.
